FAQs about prevention

Can I obtain corruption prevention advice anonymously?

Yes. The Prevention Advice line enables you to contact an experienced ICAC corruption prevention practitioner without giving your name or identifying your agency if that is what you prefer.

If I approach the ICAC for corruption prevention advice, do I have to inform my organisation?

No. You can seek advice without acting as a representative of the organisation that you work for. You can contact the corruption prevention advice line simply as an individual public sector employee or to discuss a prevention issue perhaps prior to taking more formal or official action. The ICAC is also able to provide advice to members of the public that might wish to discuss corruption prevention issues.

Are individuals or agencies required to act on the ICAC's corruption prevention advice?

No, it is just advice. Under the ICAC Act, there is no requirement for individuals or agencies to follow the ICAC's corruption prevention advice.

Will the ICAC approve or endorse my proposed course of action?

Generally not. Our corruption prevention staff will be as helpful as possible but do not provide formal approvals or endorsements.

Can I ask the ICAC to review a policy or procedure?

Yes. Provided the resources are available, the ICAC’s corruption prevention team is able to provide general feedback on an agency’s policies, procedures and corruption control framework.

Does the ICAC provide legal advice?

No. This is not one of the functions of the ICAC.

How will the advice be provided?

We will do our best to provide you with a prompt response over the phone or in writing. Where practical, we are also happy to meet in person.

If I ask for corruption prevention advice and confess that I have done something corrupt, will ICAC investigate me?

It may but the ICAC’s response will depend on the circumstances. Contacting the Prevention Advice line does provide immunity from the ICAC’s investigative functions.
