Rural and Regional Outreach Program

The ICAC’s Outreach Program was started in 2001 to take our corruption prevention advice and resources to non-metropolitan areas of NSW.

The ICAC conducts two comprehensive Rural and Regional Outreach Program visits each year. Each visit includes a hands-on week of workshops, discussion groups, school visits and briefing sessions.

These visits aim to:

  • raise understanding of corruption risks
  • provide practical corruption prevention information
  • give advice on how to report corrupt activities.

Sixteen visits have been held so far:

  • Riverina - 2008
  • Hunter – State Agencies – 2008
  • Hunter – Local Government2007
  • North Coast – 2007
  • New England – 2006

Workshops for public officials

ICAC officers run free workshops for public officials about:

  • ICAC powers, functions and resources for the public sector
  • identifying corruption risks
  • putting prevention strategies in place
  • managing internal reporting systems
  • protected disclosures
  • fact-finding and investigations within a public sector agency/council.

Supervisors and middle to senior managers should come to the workshops. Although these workshops are free, spaces are limited so it is always good to book early. If, having booked, you are unable to attend on the day, please arrange for another member of your team to attend.

Community activities

The outreach visit also includes information sessions for community groups such as local high school students, media, community and business leaders.

Visits to local councils and state agencies

Our teams of ICAC officers travel to locations within the region to talk with regional offices of state agencies. The discussions are informal and range over a wide range of corruption resistance related issues. They give senior managers an opportunity to ask questions, raise problems and discuss relevant events with ICAC staff.

Please contact Bill Kokkaris, Senior Project Officer ph: 02 8281 5877 or bkokkaris@icac.nsw.gov.au if you want to know more about the visit to Greater Western Sydney in November 2008.
